Underground America Day
Underground America Day was founded by architect Malcolm Wells
in 1974. Mr. Wells passed away in 2009 but Underground America
Day lives on to celebrate the thousands of homeowners who have
decided to live a more ecologically aware lifestyle.
It is rumored that every May 14, Punxsutawney Phil comes out
of the ground and looks to make sure that Underground America
Day is still on and that there will be someone there to scratch
his belly. Unlike Groundhog Day, however Underground America Day
has no expectations of when Spring will come.
On May 14 every year, prairie dogs across Kansas are saluting
the underground dwellers and earth sheltered home buyers who have
decided to use the resources that Mother Earth has given. It is
a time for the owners of underground homes and earth sheltered
houses to tip their hats to the local utility companies upon whom
they are less dependent.
On Underground America Day, survivalists and environmentalists
come above ground and do a little jig and say a toast to the sun
and the rest of the inhabitants on Earth who pay out the nose
for power. Underground America Day may be a little celebrated
holiday as no one gets off of work or school for this occasion.
On Underground America Day, however, a few maverick homeowners
are satisfied with their choice of lifestyle and celebrating no
going along with the crowd.
